TWENTY-THREE
The fiery arrow touched down and the world turned bright red.
At the last second, the brothersâ Executioners grabbed the three Kalderans by the collar and threw them fifteen feet up in the air.
Right when the blast hit and the road was set ablaze.
The Count felt the searing hot air of the deflagration whip at his face, missing him by a hairâs breadth, as he reached the apex of his ascent. And he watched, as the flames devoured his horse and bit into the legs of the Executioners, singeing their black fur.
The beasts growled, but they would take the heat no problem. It would require more than a tiny bonfire to put their tough skin to the test.
With a blow from their tail, they snuffed out the blaze around them and caught the three acrobats before they crashed and broke their neck.
A few hundred feet ahead, Xarâthir was launching itself at the gate. His horns pierced through the wooden panels as if they were going through foliage.
That was the signal the other teams had been waiting for.
âAttack!â The directive traveled through the ranks, and the rest of the army followed suit and gave the assault.
Gripping onto the Executionersâ mane, the Kalderans led the way and rushed towards the entrance to catch up with Xarâthir.
By the time they got there, the Countâs dark companion had already taken care of the Chargers that had laid waste to the first battalions. Their internal organs were splattered all over the floor like squashed bugsâ.
Still thirsty for destruction, Xarâthir had climbed to the top of the walls and was now making archers rain down.
âGood Xarâthir.â The Count cajoled it through their special link.
He could feel the thrill and excitement as he uncovered the bloody path his double had left behind.
âNo one, absolutely no one can compete with us.â
A new opportunity to prove that statement came right up as Isumi reinforcements stormed the townâs square. Charging at them through the vacated place, hundreds of horsemen seemed intent on sharpening their blade on their bones. A good dozen dark companions completed their ranks.
âItâs time to show them, boys! This is where we win this battle!â The Count said, jumping off the back of his sonâs Executioner.
While the enemy closed in on them, smashing through a few stalls, the Count drew his sword and planted his feet into the ground.
He scanned the first lines of attackers whose faces were deformed by a curious mixture of fear and anger. A familiar expression he had witnessed so many times on the battlefield.
At least, that scared cannon fodder had made the trip, unlike Tomodori whose ugly mug was nowhere to be seen. The coward hadnât dared showing his face to try and defend his capital. He hadnât dared coming here to face his rival. What a piece of trash! He didnât deserve to rule or have any kind of power whatsoever. He claimed to base his regime in goodness and morality. Ha! How laughable! Kalderan would take so much pleasure in snatching it all from his grasp.
